How an
Addiction Relapse Can Ruin an
Individual’s Life

Many people are under the impression that once an addict has
overcome his or her addiction, or are making an effort to do so, he or she will
stay clean for the rest of their life. Sadly, this is not always the case, and
many addicts will fall victim to an addiction relapse. This is not to say that every addict will relapse, as more
often than not, these individuals will go on to lead a happy, sober life once
they have realised what the drugs and alcohol did to them in the first place.
However, some addicts will be unable to control their urges
to consume the substance they were once reliant upon and will consequently fall
into a downward spiral of addiction. One woman who was no stranger to addiction
relapse was actress Carrie Fisher, who sadly passed away recently due to
cardiac arrest but which is now being linked to her excessive drug and alcohol
abuse over the years. Sources have claimed that she suffered from an addiction
relapse just shortly before her untimely death.
‘High as A Kite’
The Star Wars legend was known for having a drug and alcohol
addiction that consumed her life for many years, and sources have confirmed that
Ms Fisher suffered an addiction relapse shortly before she passed away. The
source explained, “Carrie had relapsed around Thanksgiving. I saw her myself
high as a kite once, not that long ago. Some of her friends I talked to doubted
she was ever totally clean and sober because she got doctor’s prescriptions to
treat her bipolar disorder, depression and anxiety. Ironically, she said to me,
‘You’re too old to get high anymore, dear.’ I replied, ‘You, too, dear’.”
Rumours
Ms Fisher shared a picture on social media of herself
lovingly posing with her dog, but if you look closely in the background, it
appears that there are two bottles of beer sitting there; this has sparked more
rumours that her death was drug- and alcohol-related. She was never shy when speaking
about her addiction, which is something that was appreciated by many addicts
and encouraged them to seek support in regards to overcoming their own
addiction. She had once spoken to Diane Sawyer about her illness and said, “I
used to think I was a drug addict, pure and simple – just someone who could not
stop taking drugs willfully.”
Missed Profoundly
The news of her death was confirmed in a statement that was
made on behalf of her only daughter Billie Lourd. The statement read: “It is
with a very deep sadness that Billie confirms that her beloved mother Carrie
Fisher passed away at 8.55 this morning. She was loved by the world, and she
will be missed profoundly. Our entire family thanks you for your thoughts and
prayers.”
Although Ms Fisher has now passed away, her legacy will live
on, and her story will continue to help many addicts around the world when
trying to beat their addiction. They may use the tragic circumstances of Ms
Fisher’s death as motivation to get clean as they can now see the true effects
of what a drug and alcohol addiction can do to an individual.
Potential Risks of Relapse
Even when a former addict has finally kicked his or her
habit, there is still the potential risk of an addiction relapse. This can
often frighten addicts as they do not want to go through the difficult task of
overcoming addiction and then having to do this all again if they relapse. For
some, this is motivation to ensure that they do not turn back to the drugs,
others simply cannot help it. Addiction relapse is not something that will
affect every addict, it just depends on the strength and determination of the
individual to get clean and stay clean; it is a challenging task but is
entirely possible with the right help and support.
Overcoming A Drug and Alcohol Addiction
While addiction relapse may form a very important part of
the recovery process for some individuals in that it motivates them to stay
clean going forward, most people agree that avoiding it is the best course of
action if possible.
