Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
By Dr.fourkan Ali
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common gynecological disorder that affects women of the reproductive age. PCOS causes irregular menstrual periods, excessive body weight, facial hair growth and cysts in the ovaries. The exact cause of PCOS is unclear. Some of the factor such as genetics and bad dietary choices could play a role in developing the disease. Women with PCOS are more likely to have a sister or mother with PCOS.
PCOS may be mild, moderate or severe. The mild form of PCOD (Polycystic ovarian disease) may not affect mensuration but the woman may take a longer time to conceive. The more severe form of PCOD leads to infertility, obesity and hirsutism. Women with POCS are at a three times higher risk of miscarriage during pregnancy when compared to women without PCOS.
Some women with PCOS are less sensitive to insulin. Excess production of male growth hormones may results in the acne, ovulation issues and weight gain. Symptoms of PCOS vary from person to person. There is no cure for the disease, but it can be controlled. Treatment is based on the symptoms and age of the person. Adoption of healthy lifestyle is the best treatment for PCOS.
