The Industrial city of Khulna is lost.
Fourkan Ali
Sound
of whistle is no more heard in Khulna city formerly known as Industrial City. The footsteps of the labors are not seen. Few of the
labors are struggling there by starving. Many of the ex-labors are taking
diversified occupations to run their lives as well their family. The
development of Industrial city Khulna is retreated in stead of going ahead from
our independence (1971). It is a matter of sorrow that for this reason Khulna
is now a Dead City. Still people know about Khulna because of the prior
Industrialization which took place in Khulna. Khulna is the 3rd
largest Industrial city of Bangladesh. Once upon a time Khulna was famous for
the Sundarbans. Besides it was also famous for Molasses and Salt industry.
Prior to that in the early years of 19th Century this district was
famous for indigo cultivation. Up to the year 1870 indigo was an important item
for international trade. Khulna is not only known as Port City but also as
Industrial city. Khulna comes after Dhaka & Chittagong in case of
industrialization. Khulna played a master role in case of the industrial
development of the country. But all these are incident of the years after 1950.
Basing on the industries set up from 1950 to 1965, Khulna came out with the
sensation of Industrial city. Once upon a time there was no other Heavy
Industrial Institution except the Khulna Textile Mills before 1947. The British
colonial rule was the main cause of this condition. The English had reigned for
200 years. They had no interest to establish Heavy Industry in this region.
They used this region as the source of Industrial raw materials and the market
of industrial goods. In this time all the industries which were established
were east located in Calcutta. On 18th Century Murshidabad was the
Capital of Bengal Nawabs. Calcutta kept developing with its own name and
advantages. Calcutta became the main port of Bengal before the British reign
started from 1757. Calcutta became the lit-light area of a large country. Tow
or three Jute Mills & several Textile Mills were the starting of
industrialization process in Calcutta. In 1772 all the Govt. institutions were
shifted to Calcutta. Besides setting up rail station on reverse side of the Ganges
in Hawra and setting up rail Hawra to Ashansole in 1854 created a great
opportunity for the nearby areas to be industrialized.
