Risks
of Storing Drugs in the HomeTREATMENT
CENTRS
The risks that a
parent assumes for his or her child when storing drugs in the home are
significant – no matter what form those drugs take. These risks cover a range
of possibilities, including:
·
Risk of an accidental
child overdose
·
Increased risk of
other accident
·
Harm due to neglect
·
Risks related to
exposure to adults who are under the influence
Doctors at the
Colorado’s Children’s Hospital report that 14 children who were recently
treated for marijuana exposure exhibited a wide array of symptoms; two of the
cases were serious enough to require that the children stay in intensive care
units.
It’s a legal issue as
well as a safety issue – parents are facing charges for neglect that could lead
to jail time and fines. It’s a problem that’s growing in the states where
medical marijuana is legalized and the drug is available in the form of edibles
like brownies or cookies that are particularly attractive to children,
according to a study published in JAMA Pediatrics.
The good news? An
emergency event like this can be the catalyst for drug abusers to finally get
the treatment necessary to leave drugs behind forever.
The Wakeup Call
Arrest, emergency or
accident caused by drug use that affects the addicted person or someone they
love, the overdose of a friend who uses drugs, threat of job loss or divorce –
there are a number of issues that can cause someone living in an active
addiction to finally realize that their use of drugs and alcohol can have very
real consequences. However, it may take the assistance of concerned family
members to help the addicted person to make the leap and realize that those
consequences can be avoided if they get the treatment assistance they need to
break free from drug use and addiction.
Helping Your Loved One Choose Treatment
The conversation about
entering treatment is not an easy conversation to have, especially in the midst
of a crisis. Many families shy away from the idea of bringing up drug rehab during
these times because they feel like they are exploiting a sensitive event.
The fact is, however,
that there is no better time than the days immediately following an accident or
hardship caused by addiction. It’s direct, painful, and immediate proof that
addiction is hurting the addicted people and others in their lives. Little good
can often come out of such events, but if such an event causes someone to enter
drug rehab and get the help needed to turn their life around, then something
positive was a result.
