Recreational Drug Use

Recreational Drug Use
By Dr.Fourkan Ali
Recreational drug use is the use of a drug without any medicinal reason other than to experience the effects of the drug. Such drug use is often considered to be drug abuse and is often illegal. In addition to legal drug use such as alcohol, tobacco and caffeine, recreational drug use covers the abuse of substances such as marijuana, cocaine, and other controlled substances.
Common Recreational Drugs
The most common recreational drug used is caffeine, which is legal across the world but forbidden in some religions. Alcohol and tobacco are also high on the list of common drugs used recreationally, which is legal but regulated in most countries. Alcohol is illegal in some countries and not consumed by members of some religions. Opiates such as morphine are used for pain relief in medicine, but abused by people who use it to achieve highs and out-of-body experiences.
Uppers and Downers
Uppers are stimulant drugs such as speed which increase activity and alertness by raising the heart-rate and blood pressure. Such drugs can be very dangerous when they are abused. If you develop a drug addiction, or even use the regularly, they can cause damage to the heart, lungs, and liver, and potentially be fatal. Downers are depressant drugs such as ketamine which can anaesthetise and slow down activity. Abuse of such drugs can be highly dangerous as they numb pain. These drugs can potentially leading to a loss of consciousness or coma if taken excessively.

Freebase Cocaine, Crack Cocaine and Powder Cocaine
Regardless of the type of cocaine being used, there are many health consequences that can develop from using it. Some of the short-term effects of cocaine use are constantly dilated pupils and peripheral blood vessels. Cocaine users can also expect to experience a constant rise in heart rate, temperature and blood pressure while using the drug.
Other effects include bouts of insomnia, irritability, anxiety and feelings of restlessness along with a loss of appetite. How the user chooses to consume the drug will also result in additional effects.
Consuming cocaine makes users feel they are on top of the world. Its effects are similar to those of amphetamines or speed. The biggest difference is that the effects of cocaine use are stronger and more intense, but do not last as long.
If the cocaine user chooses to snort their drug, they can expect the high to last approximately 20 to 30 minutes. The high produced by taking the drug in this manner is relatively short-lived, meaning once the user begins to come down, they will encounter a ‘coke crash’ that leaves them with feelings of fatigue, depression, and irritability.
The effects of smoking crack cocaine are almost immediate. The feeling of euphoria and stimulation peaks for two or three minutes and lasts in total for about ten minutes whereas snorted coke offers a slower peak time but lasts about 20 to 30 minutes.
In addition to the health problems previously mentioned, long-term drug addiction of any form of cocaine can trigger paranoia and other mental health issues
